Resolutions for Civic Literacy

I will both limit and protest gratuitous violence, especially in my DAILY life. This includes movies, television, games, books and magazines.

I will consume less - repairing and repurposing BEFORE I replace whenever possible.

I will organize, utilizie and minimize my possessions.

I will actively resist stereotyping, marketing, reductionism, emotionalism and ignorance. An opinion is NOT a fact. Unsubstantiated opinion is NOT informed argument.

Acting from my own values is more important than the opinions or expectations of other people.

I'm 52 years old and currently involved in a long-term relationship.

My knitting group on MeetUp:  Mountain Highway Knitters celebrated its 1-year anniversary this past summer and I am now also moderator for a Ravelry group: Mountain Highway Crafters.  I have volunteered at Vogue Knitting Live (in Bellevue) where I manned the Market doors, dressed runway models, staffed the registration desk, and provided assistance in the Beginners Lounge. I've also attended various local knitting and craft events.  The knitting group I founded turns two this month.

I'm pagan and see the divine in Nature, but I'm more spiritual than religious.  I was born in Washington State and moved back home in December 1999. I share my home with my partner Ron, two cats, two black pugs and a small parrot.

I suffered my first broken bone when I fractured my right arm just below the shoulder last summer. I wound up staying with my mom for a month and undergoing months of physical therapy.  I've got most of my motion back and knitting helped to retain my flexibility.  I don't recommend it, but I'm definitely more ambidextrous that I used to be!

I got my IT certifications: MCDST (Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician) and CompTIA Security+.   I will be getting certified for MS Windows 7 this fall.  I am also thinking of enrolling in a Master's program with Pacifica Graduate Institute, perhaps when I retireI have a Reiki certification and I was certified as an Adult Literacy Tutor by TALC.  I also enjoy all my tech toys and recently bade Sprint farewell and moved to Republic Wireless (phones) and FreedomPop (mobile hot spot).  I highly recommend both!

Note:  I have four tattoos (water, earth, air and fire)  - click here for pictures of all four!  I am now toying with the idea of a back piece, perhaps the Millennium Gaia.  I highly recommend Brian (owner) or the other artists at the Tattoo Machine in Puyallup, WA.  (Note:  I just found out tha Brian is still in business and the "itch" for something new has started.)

Support Our Citizens, Our Civil Rights
and Our Armed Forces

1.  Stop the Backdoor Draft - Encourage Diplomacy
- Military members:  refuse to deploy under stop loss.
- National Guard:  refuse to deploy outside the US.
- Citizens and Friends:  denounce torture, support civil rights, demand the separation of church and state AND the division of power BETWEEN the branches of government.
2.  Stop Funding Overseas Aggression - Stop the War for Oil and the War on Terror
- Meeting economic threats with military action isn't acceptable.
- Support the use of the military ONLY for international actions approved and coordinated by the United Nations.
- Renounce fear and secrecy.  Support transparency in government.
- Terrorists are criminals not soldiers.  Act accordingly.
3.  Stop the Drilling, Fraking and Nuclear!
- Drilling and fraking don't solve problems, they create them.
- Clean coal is entirely theoretical and thus a myth.
- Nuclear power encourages nuclear proliferation and has no answer to storing the radioactive waste.
- Subsidize solar and wind instead.
- Our addiction to oil is killing us and destroying the natural world.
4. Stop the Transfer of Wealth to the Wealthy - Stop Poverty
- Repeal subsidies and privileges for profitable commodities and organizations.
- Tax luxuries, inheritances, large incomes, corporations and monopolies - not the common citizen.
-  No more tax cuts for the wealthy.  Simplify the system.  Save the middle class!
- Support universal health care, unions and campaign reform. That means single-payer!  Allow early enrollment in Medicare.
5. Stop the Assault on Immigrants and Civil Rights
- Offer a clear, simple, and free path to citizenship.
- Stop separating parents from children and husbands from wives - stop destroying families if you have family values.
- People died to protect your civil rights, all of them.  Those rights belong to everyone and are not a privilege for the few.  Don't let fear, bigotry or greed trump them.

"Honor requires the soldier to kill or be killed, whatever his scruples.  But it is not regarded as dishonorable for the politician to swallow his misgivings and allow the young to die without protest."

"The simple fact that occupying armies, whether allied or enemy, always become unpopular hardly ever figures in official calculation."

--- I.F. Stone on the Vietnam War.

It's been nearly two and a half years since the much-missed Molly Ivins observed of media moguls that, "for some reason, they assume people will want to buy more newspapers if they have less news in them and are less useful."
